New MRF for Port Ghalib - 21 Jun 2008

HEPCA is delighted to announce that we have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding in anticipation of constructing a second Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Port Ghalib.

The new Facility will service over 4000 rooms in the Port Ghalib development and will also provide waste collection, separation and recycling for the rapidly expanding airport. The funding for the project is kindly provided by Vodafone.

The MRF not only focuses on the collection and recycling of waste, but also provides valuable employment to the local community and generates income through the selling on of recyclable material. The MRF in Marsa Alam has already led to a substantial increase in the environmental awareness and education throughout the entire region, and we are sure to see a similar positive effect with the second MRF. HEPCA is still in consultation regarding a MRF for the Hurghada region and we hope to have some positive news on this soon.

Moorings for the Rosalie Moller - 21 Jun 2008

With the conservation work on the SS Thistlegorm successfully completed, attention has now turned to the wreck of the Rosalie Moller. Sadly, this beautiful and iconic Red Sea wreck has suffered considerable damage over the last few years.

In the next month, HEPCA will be undertaking further assessment and an installation of a mooring system to protect the fragile wreck from further damage. Due to the depth of the wreck, technical divers will be carrying out the work and the HEPCA mooring team will be supported by divers from Red Sea Explorers, Blue O Two and Diving Attitude amongst others. Conventional moorings will not be possible due to the depth and conditions, so a system of wires and ropes attached to the structure of the wreck is planned. Full details of the installation will be provided soon so keep an eye out for further announcements.

The conservation work is part of HEPCA’s Saving the Red Sea Wrecks Campaign. Our work on the Thistlegorm attracted massive media interest and support. You can read just some of the press articles and find more information in our Campaigns section.
